Can vertical farms save the planet?
Vertical farms could be one of the most sustainable ways to meet rising food demand throughout the 21st century.
By 2050, the world population is expected to reach approximately 10 billion people — that’s about 2 billion more mouths to feed than today. Meeting that demand will be difficult. Doing so sustainably will be even harder, but perhaps necessary considering that producing more food through current practices would exacerbate both climate change and existing problems with the food supply caused by 20th-century industrial farming.
One problem is soil quality. Over the past 150 years, farming has depleted much of the world’s topsoil, while modern industrial practices like monocropping and chemical use have degraded soil quality, directly impacting the quality and amount of food farmers can produce.

Agriculture is also one of the leading emitters of greenhouse gases in the world, and to date, the industry has cleared an area larger than South America for farmland. Although the world’s fertile land could be a renewable resource, large swaths of it are depleted every year due to farming and climate change, which incentivizes deforestation to create more farmland.

Vertical farming is one solution that is changing the way we think about food production. Vertical farming is a type of controlled-environment agriculture (CEA), in which crops are grown indoors in vertically stacked rows that rely on LED lighting technology in the place of natural sunlight.

Growing & Storing Basil Leaves
Basil can be grown in pots, window boxes, or garden beds. It needs a lot of sunlight and water to grow well. Basil plants also need to be harvested regularly. Otherwise, they’ll stop growing new leaves.
The best way to remove basil leaves from the stem is by grasping them at the base of the stem with one hand while gently pulling them down with your other hand.
Basil should be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or wrapped in damp paper towels and stored inside a sealed plastic bag for up to 1 week. Basil will wilt if it is left out on the counter for too long.
Vertical Farming & Basil Leaves
If you’re not familiar with vertical farming, it is a type of farming that can occur in small areas such as a building, homes, or warehouses. It can be done indoors or outdoors. Vertical farms are especially useful for urban areas where space is limited, and the demand for food is high. The idea behind vertical farming is to take advantage of the benefits of traditional horizontal farming (such as not taking up valuable land) but to do so more efficiently by stacking plants and crops vertically.

The Master of Sauce
I had the pleasure of reuniting with Master Chef Ehjiaue. She’s known by her sauces. There are five mother sauces which are béchamel sauce, veloute sauce, brown or espagnole sauce, hollandaise sauce and tomato sauce. It felt awkward talking to her because the last time we worked together I quit on her. (It wasn’t the brightest moment in my life.) But this Master Chef of sauces just took me under her wing again and I intend on making the best of our relationship so that everyone, including our clients, can benefit.
I’m known to challenge them all and twist them into something and daring ”, If I take you under my wing once more this time there is no quitting. ” by Chef Freedom Mercado
